What is a Chemical Peel?

What is a chemical peel?

The chemical peels we provide are medical grade glycolic acid and mandelic acid peels. They peels work by removing the skins very top layer (the stratum corneum) to improve the overall appearance of the skin. Glycolic and mandelic acid peels have proven anti-ageing benefits by delivering highly concentrated glycolic acid to the skin which increases collagen and boosts cell turnover.

What are the benefits?

Chemical skin peels can be very effective at reducing the appearance of fine surface lines and wrinkles, blemishes, pigment problems, acne and acne scarring. They increase hydration and suppleness and help to improve the appearance and texture of your skin. They can help reduce the ageing effects of smoking and sun exposure, giving your skin a more youthful, healthy glow.

Will I require a follow up?

To maximise the benefits of Glycolic acid skin peels we recommend a course of four treatments to be repeated at four to six weekly intervals depending on the condition of your skin. A treatment plan will be created at your initial consultation. The strength of the peel is increased at each treatment, starting at 20% and increasing to 35%, 50% and finally 70%.

We can also advise about our range of Neostrata home care products which can be used in between treatments  to maximise the results.

What happens during the procedure?

Prior to your peel it is important to prepare your skin by using our Neostrata Ultra Smoothing Cream containing glycolic acid, which we provide at your consultation appointment. You will need to apply this cream once daily for two weeks prior to your peel.

"I've had a couple of other treatments before going with Joanna and she listened to what i wanted and was very professional and caring, and without a shadow of a doubt produced the best results I've had to date! Her aftercare is also first class so i would highly recommend Joanna in a heartbeat and will soon be going back."

A chemical peel is a treatment to refine and improve the condition of facial skin. It is done by removing the skins damaged outer layers and stimulating the regenerative process by skin cell renewal.

All of our peels are tailored to meet the needs of the client which will be discussed in your initial consultation and skin assessment prior to your treatment.

The procedure will last for approximately fifteen to twenty minutes. The face is cleansed, we then apply the peel for upto 7 minutes. This may feel hot and uncomfortable but with a hand held fan this process is usually entirely manageable for our clients.  The peel process is stopped with our Neostrata peel neutraliser. And post treatment protection cream and sun protection is applied to the face.  It is advised to wear SPF 50 sun protection for one week post treatment.

What types of chemical peels are used?

At S18 Face Clinic we use the Neostrata range of glycolic acid peels.

What happens after my appointment?

You can carry on with your day as normal after your treatment. Your face maybe slightly red for an hour or two after your treatment, though you can apply a little mineral make up to help with this.
